Tsunami Looking to Right Some Wrongs after the Christmas Break

Following a disappointing start to the season, and a very disappointing record of 1-3, Brighton Tsunami return to post-Christmas training full of enthusiasm,. This week there was a real eagerness to get back into things and right the wrongs of the early season. Brighton began the year with a very disappointing double overtime loss away to UEA Pirates. This was then followed by a good win against a strong Canterbury Charger team. However the team followed this good win with very agonising losses to the Kent Falcons and the Greenwich Mariners.

The team are looking to regroup and make a push for a post-season berth in the SEC. However, to achieve this they will have to win out their remaining games; starting with an exciting matchup January 29th. The team travel north to face the Westminster Dragons. The start up team’s Offensive Coordinator is Tsunami’s ex-Head Coach and Hall of Famer Martin Harrison. Brighton Tsunami looks to kick off 2012 with a confident performance and a result to match.

In other news, the BUAFL recently confirmed that Brighton will move from the SEC to the TVC for the 2012/13 season. This will see the team re-establish old rivalries with Portsmouth and Southampton.

Tsunami through to quarter finals of Challenge Trophy

Tsunami 19 - 8 Pirates

Last week, Brighton Tsunami made BUAFL history by becoming the first team below .500 to make the playoffs. This week they broke records once again as they became the first team in Tsunami history to win a playoff game. Brighton had a four hour coach trip to Norwich and a 6:15 start to overcome but they pulled it off in style.

Previous encounters between these teams have ended with nail-biting field goals, this one started with one. QB Alex Surplice, back from injury, marched the offence down the field but couldn’t convert on third down. The kicking unit came on and Tsunami captain Bradley McManus kicked the 35 yard field goal. The Pirates came on but Brighton’s defence held firm and forced UEA into a three and out. Following a good return by WR Simeon Marriott-Dixon, the offence took back to the field at the Brighton 45.

Brighton wasted no time in scoring on their second drive as well. Some wonder catches by WR Matthew Russell and some bruising running from RBs TK Chisango and Dave Ndebe set Brighton up inside the red zone again. Ndebe rushed in from nine yards out to put up six points. The two point conversion was no good.

Brighton and UEA then traded a few series before Tsunami’s defence stopped UEA on a fourth down attempt in the second quarter. Once again the offence came out and the Surplice-Russell combination carried on paying dividends as Russell pulled in several catches on third downs. Brighton found themselves on the one yard line and Surplice dived over the offensive line to score. Brighton went for two points and Surplice connected with Russell in the back of the end zone to put Brighton 17-0 ahead.

On the next Tsunami drive, rookie QB Jake Beale looked effective moving the chains until on second down, he was picked off by the Pirates safety. He looked to return the interception to the endzone but for a touchdown-saving tackle by Chisango. Unfortunately it was not enough as the Pirates managed to find a way through Brighton’s defence with the short field and converted the two point conversion. At half time, the score was delicately poised at 17 – 8.

In the third quarter, UEA came out looking ready to move the chains. On a drive that looked like it was gathering momentum, CB Bryn Price picked off the ball and returned the ball 12 yards thanks to some blocking. The Brighton offence seemed to stall and at the end of the third, P Ben Soro-Perez needed to come out to pin the Pirates back. He landed the punt on the Pirates’ two yard line.

The first play of the fourth resulted in DE Oli Whitfield sacking the Pirates’ QB in the endzone and recording the second Tsunami safety in two games. Brighton’s defence stood firm for the rest of the game and Tsunami won 19-8.

After the game, Head Coach Martin Harrison awarded the offensive MVP to Matthew Russell, the defensive MVP went to Shaun Jones whilst the Special Teams MVP was given to Ben Soro-Perez.

Brighton Tsunami will now travel to Southampton to face the Team Solent Redhawks who finished the regular season 6-2. During the regular season, Brighton narrowly lost to Solent 22-17 so they will be looking to turn the tables and make the semi finals of the Challenge Trophy. The game will be played on Sunday 27th March at Wide Lane Sports Field, Southampton (near the airport).
